Student Support

Riverina Community College is committed to ensuring each student is provided with the support to attain the goals he/she has set. The College has introduced a number of professional student support functions within its programs such as Language Literacy and Numeracy (LNN); Career Planning; Life Skills and Planning; How to Get a Job; Mentoring through Difficult Times. Students undertake an assessment including LLN prior to commencement of most programs and this assessment is used to determine the level of support, if any, required. A Student Support Officer is then allocated to an individual or group depending on the identified needs.

Industry and student feedback has shown that this flexible, fully supported approach to student learning works. The College has some excellent outcomes achieved.

Work Placement

The College believes the inclusion of a work placement or work experience component to its programs provides the student with an advantage. The student is able to apply the knowledge and skills he/she has gained in the classroom to the workplace. This often proves to be the winning edge when competing in the job market.

Riverina Community College maintains excellent relationships with key industries within the community and will assist you in sourcing your work placement employer. Work placement will require you to become part of that workplace and usually includes completing a variety of documents such as a log book, journal, third party verifications and small reports. This often also contributes to your assessment activities.

You will be visited and monitored in your workplace by your Trainer, Student Support Officer or Student Engagement Officer.

Smart and Skilled (S&S)

Riverina Community College is an approved provider under the Smart & Skilled program which is provided through the NSW Department of Primary Industries. This allows you to train with us and receive the full subsidies should you be eligible.

Adult and Community Education (ACE)

Grants are received from NSW Department of Primary Industries ACE unit that cover specific types of training and support for disadvantaged learners, regional and remote communities and hard to service communities. This program is designed to assist those members of the community to gain the skills and knowledge to engage in mainstream training programs through S&S or traineeships/apprenticeships.

The college provides both individual and group support for students within the classroom with the aim to achieve the best outcome for that student. Student Support Officers and the College’s Student Engagement Officer strive to ensure each student meets his/her individual potential.

Tech Savvy Seniors

Tech Savvy Seniors is an initiative of the NSW Ageing Strategy and targets those over 60 with limited computer experience to develop digital awareness. The aim of this program is to encourage older people to embrace the world of technology to become connected and on-line, enabling them to communicate more broadly with family and friends. Participants are taught how to safely use social media and other technology to overcome social disadvantage within their community.

Personal and Professional Development

Non-accredited learning programs are designed to develop the skills and knowledge of the community for either personal or work purposes.

The demand for these programs has shifted from the traditional cooking, languages and hobbies to more technical, digital awareness and work related self-improvement programs as older people are required to continue in employment for longer or choose to develop skills that will enable them to offer services on a volunteer basis.

The college has had a long standing relationship with milliners from Wagga Wagga and districts. Workshops from novice through to professional are catered for. We are proud to have been a sponsor of the 2016 International Millinery Forum. Over 120 delegates from the UK and Spain and across Australia came together at the College in Wagga Wagga to learn the latest techniques, skills and millinery trends.

The College regularly runs the following:

  • First Aid
  • RSA and RCG
  • White card

The College welcomes ideas for expanding our non-accredited programs, if you or your group have identified a need we will endeavour to provide a solution to that need.

Likewise if you are passionate about something we would love to hear from you with a view to identifying others in the community who may benefit from your knowledge. We will assist you to start a group.
